Why Miller Moths Hit Castle Rock So Hard
Miller moths are the adult form of the army cutworm (Euxoa auxiliaris). They overwinter as larvae in plains soil east of the Front Range, feeding on winter wheat, alfalfa, and other crops. When temperatures climb in late spring, the adults emerge and start a multi-hundred-mile westward migration toward the high-altitude meadows of the Rockies. In late summer they reverse course and head back to the plains to lay the next generation of eggs.
Castle Rock sits squarely in that migration corridor. The exact intensity varies year to year depending on conditions on the eastern plains the previous fall and winter. A wet fall and mild winter mean a heavier migration the following spring. Drier conditions on the plains can also push more moths toward Front Range moisture as they pass through.

Can you just spray for miller moths?
We can, but it will not solve the problem. Miller moths are passing through your property over a multi-week migration, not resident on it. A barrier treatment that knocks down the moths present this morning will not affect the wave arriving this evening. Exclusion and light management are the interventions that actually move the needle.
Are miller moths dangerous to my family or pets?
Not in any meaningful sense. They do not bite, sting, carry disease, damage structures, contaminate food, or reproduce indoors. Severe allergies to moth scales exist but are rare. For the vast majority of people they are an aesthetic and psychological problem, not a health one.
Will they damage my house, furniture, or food?
No. Miller moths do not eat fabric, wood, drywall, or stored food. They do not lay eggs indoors and do not establish colonies. Dead ones can leave dust and scales on windowsills and around light fixtures, but that is the extent of it.
How long does miller moth season last in Castle Rock?
